Raya Travel Hacks: Stay safe this Aidilfitri

It’s that time of the year again when Malaysians celebrate the biggest festivity in this vibrant melting pot of cultures and traditions that is our home country. The sacred month of Ramadan is the start of many “buka puasa” gatherings and home visits that are not only enjoyed by Muslims but the entire nation.  After a month of fasting, Malaysian Muslims finally open their doors to welcome family and friends to the joys of bright coloured lights, delicious cookies, and family favourites – “ketupat and kuah kacang,” which are the makings of the perfect Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Amidst all the excitement, it is important to keep your family and your house safe especially when you balik kampung. Home security is a constant challenge we all face; even more so during festive seasons. Here are a few safety tips to make sure that you get to enjoy the festive fun this Raya, while keeping your home and family safe. Before leaving your humble abode, make sure to remember the following:

  1. Maintain visibility

Keep the exterior of your house well-lit so intruders are less able to hide. Ideally, leave the lights on, but if you are going away for a longer period, consider investing in motion-sensor lighting to alert your neighbours should intruders cross into your backyard.

  1. Keep your valuables out of sight

Make sure your windows are properly locked and covered with curtains or blinds. Secondly, be mindful of what you leave lying in plain sight – such as laptops, bags or other expensive looking items. Leaving valuables in plain sight will only increase the likelihood that thieves will break into your home.

  1. Don’t hide your keys in “secret” places

We all have secret hiding places for spare keys – under the mat, beneath the third flower pot on the window sill or inside the crack beside the gate lamp. The problem is that thieves know these hiding spots all too well. Instead, try leaving the house keys with a trusted neighbour and avoid the risk of having your house broken into. You’ll also save yourself the trouble of changing the house locks should the spare key go missing.

  1. Tell a neighbour you’re going out of town

Inform a trusted neighbour of your travel plans for the festive season.  If possible, exchange contact information with them, so that you are easily reached should a break-in happen. It is always better to have someone looking out for your home while you’re away.

Now that you’ve taken these steps to ensure your home is safe, you are ready to drive back to your kampung with peace of mind. However, do remember that the highways aren’t always safe either, especially during the festive season due to high volume of traffic on the road. As you get ready for that long drive back, here are a few things to keep in mind for a safer travelling experience:

  1. Prepare yourself before driving

Before starting your journey, be sure to get enough sleep and food, and always plan your route. As there will be many travellers on the road, both heavy traffic and longer travel times are expected. A well-rested and well-fuelled body will help you overcome immediate exhaustion and prevent you from the urge to snack on the road. This helps you focus on driving and arriving safely at your destination. When planning your route, check traffic apps on your mobile to help identify routes with less traffic and avoid any high traffic areas in order to reach your destination faster. Remember: never use your mobile or check such apps while driving. If you need to confirm your route or destination, pull off the road and park your car first.

  1. Avoid driving at night

It might be a good idea to drive at night to avoid traffic jams, but you’re also more likely to get tired and dozing off behind the wheel is deadly. If you have no choice but to drive at night, make sure to plan a couple of stops at rest areas along the way – you can take the opportunity to grab a snack, drink coffee, stretch your legs or even take a power nap. 

  1. Do a quick vehicle check

As you will be on the road for a long time, make sure to do a quick car check to ensure that your vehicle is in tip-top condition before zooming off. Remember to check the tyres and ensure they are properly inflated. Also, don’t forget to check the different fluid levels such as the engine oil, transmission fluid, coolant, brake fluid and power steering fluid. Make sure you have your car toolbox and the contact number for an emergency road assistance service with you in case you experience an unexpected breakdown along the way. With journeys like these, it is always better to be well prepared.

  1. Wear your seatbelt

This is a fundamental requirement for safe driving, but also one that is often forgotten or taken for granted. Before you start the engine and back out of the garage, make sure everyone in the car is safely seated and buckled up. Not only will this only take a few seconds of everyone’s time, it will also heighten safety on the road.

Kidiotics Juara Astro Battleground 2015

Astro Battleground, pertandingan tarian jalanan (street dance) terbesar di Asia, menamatkan musim 2015 dengan aksi Grand Final yang hebat pada 4 Julai 2015 di Gelanggang Ais Sunway Pyramid. Pasukan termuda pertandingan tersebut, Kidiotics telah dinobatkan sebagai Juara Astro Battleground 2015, mengetepikan Death Notz dalam final saingan antara kumpulan. Rancangan perdana Astro dengan siaran paling lama itu juga turut menyaksikan pemenang paling muda di dalam sejarah sembilan tahun bersiaran bila Faris Azim Abd Karim dari Selangor berjaya memukau penonton dan para hakim untuk menjulang kejuaraan kategori solo.

Drama atas pentas berterusan apabila giliran krew-krew Kidiotics pula berentap antara satu sama lain untuk merebut gelaran solo, dan ia menjadi medan pertempuran di antara Siong, peserta termuda berumur 15 tahun dan Faris, krew Melayu tunggal. Dengan menguasai rentak dan koreografi, Faris menjuarai gelaran solo walaupun berasa kurang sihat dan telah mencederakan mulutnya secara tidak sengaja ketika melakukan salah satu rutin tarian. Kejayaan Faris ini lebih bermakna memandangkan beliau terpaksa beraksi dalam enam pusingan berturut-turut dan berpuasa pada masa yang sama. Ketika ditemui selepas majlis tamat dan sudah berehat seketika, freestyler yang berusia 17 tahun itu mengakui dia tidak pernah menyangka akan menjadi johan kategori solo.

“Saya menyangka Siong akan menjadi juara kerana dia telah mendahului sejak awal saingan solo. Tapi saya enggan mengalah. Saya terus berjuang hingga ke akhir, dan saya akhirnya berjaya,” kata Faris dengan penuh kegembiraan.

Dihoskan oleh bekas ratu cantik, Trisha Kuck dan penari tempatan, Dennis Yin, aksi Grand Final Astro Battleground 2015 menampilkan barisan juri yang berkaliber, terdiri daripada pakar tarian antarabangsa terkenal seperti Tai Chi (Jepun), Funky Lia (Korea), Chun Hsiang (Taiwan), Yiu (Hong Kong) and Vince (Filipina). Bukan itu sahaja! Giliran Asian Battleground pula menggegarkan scene tarian Asia di One City Grand Ballroom pada 7 Ogos 2015. Malaysia akan diwakili oleh juara Astro Battleground 2015 (Kidiotics) dan naib juara (Death NotZ), dan mereka bakal disertai oleh 11 lagi kumpulan tarian lain dari Jepun, Korea, China (Shanghai dan Hong Kong), Filipina, Vietnam, Brunei, Indonesia, Thailand, Taiwan dan Singapura dalam rancangan yang akan disiarkan LIVE menerusi Astro Wah Lai Toi (Saluran 311 dan HD CH310).

Trak sampel Kellogg’s akan berada di bazar Ramadan, pasaraya ria dan pasar raya dari 17hb Jun hingga 14hb Julai 2015. Mereka yang mengunjungi trak sampel ini juga boleh menyaksikan demonstrasi membuat kuih secara langsung oleh pakar pembuat kuih yang berbakat, untuk memperlihatkan pelbagai cara Corn Flakes® boleh digunakan untuk membuat kuih dan biskut istimewa untuk perayaan.

Dengan setiap tandatangan yang diterima, kanak-kanak dari rumah anak yatim yang terpilih akan menerima biskut Kellogg’s Corn Flakes® untuk berbuka puasa.

“MTV WORLD STAGE MALAYSIA 2015” Returns On 12 September

Get ready, Kuala Lumpur! MTV World Stage Malaysia is back – bigger than ever as MTV turns the lens on its fans with unprecedented fan offerings!MTV, a unit of Viacom Inc. (NASDAQ: VIAB, VIA), has officially announced MTV World Stage Malaysia is back for the seventh-year running. Recorded live for global telecast, the highly-anticipated outdoor event is set to take place once again at Surf Beach, Sunway Lagoon on Saturday, 12 September 2015. The event will feature a line-up with five acts to be announced in the coming weeks including two international acts, two regional acts and one #MostWantedMalaysia act who will all join the MTV stage. MTV VJs Alan and Hanli will reprise their roles as the event’s hosts.

Additionally, MTV announced it will launch a new Asia multi-platform campaign MTV Breaks ignited by Xpax, which gives talented millennials across Asia* the chance to kick-start a career in the creative industries by offering life-changing opportunities through a mentorship stint** on MTV World Stage Malaysia 2015. Launched globally at last year’s MTV EMA, it is the first time this highly successful property aimed at creating economic opportunity for talented millennials, is being launched with an Asia version in the region.

Malaysia’s #MostWanted Act for MTV World Stage Malaysia 2015

In another offering to turn the spotlight on fans, MTV is presenting an opportunity for up and coming Malaysian acts to showcase their talents as Malaysia’s #MostWanted Act at MTV World Stage Malaysia. Local artists or bands keen to participate can submit their interest via worldstage.mtvasia.com from 13 – 26 July. From 30 July – 14 August, fans can show their support by hashtagging their preferred local band or artist they want to see perform at MTV World Stage Malaysia 2015. Based on fans’ votes and other performance criteria, Malaysia’s #MostWanted Act will perform as the opening act at the show.

“Each year, the MTV World Stage Malaysia is a spectacular, multi-platform music experience for our audiences in Malaysia and around Asia. Good Vibes Presents: Echosmith and RÜFÜS

Music fans are in for a treat this August 8th, with Californian ‘Cool Kids’ Echosmith set to rock KL Live at the first of a brand-new series of shows titled ‘Good Vibes Presents’. Conceived as a way of extending that festival feeling to Malaysia all year-round, ‘Good Vibes Presents’ will give fans the chance to see top international acts in a series of one-off shows in the run-up to the main Good Vibes Festival in 2016.

Headlining the very first show in this new series is US alt-pop band Echosmith, the four-piece family of musicians behind the smash-hit single ‘Cool Kids’. This show will mark the first time the band has performed in Malaysia. They will be supported by Sydney-based dance trio RÜFÜS – also performing in Malaysia for the first time – alongside local favourites DASH and Indiego & Co.

Tickets for the gig at KL Live on 8th August are on sale now, exclusively at www.boxtix.asia. As with the main Good Vibes Festival, early-birds will be able to purchase their tickets at a special discounted rate of RM80, with further phases of tickets released as the event date draws closer.
