Over 26,000 music fansmoved to the same explosive dance beats at the SM Mall of Asia Concert Grounds on 24June 2016 for one of the biggest nights of the year in Manila – MTV Music Evolution Manila 2016. The one-night only outdoor live music event hit an all-time temperature high with a stellar line-up of international and local acts who ignited the stage in celebration of iconic and contemporary pop music with a dance influence.
Even the rain could not dampen and bring down the fever as fans moved to the pop dance beats with explosive performances by iconic international pop band and prolific hit-maker OneRepublic, L.A.-grown electric dance trio Far East Movement,Billboard Hot 100 artist, American singer-songwriter Bebe Rexha, Korea’s favorite K-pop idol female group, Apink,Philippine pop superstar father and son-tandem Gary V feat. Gab Valenciano andFilipino pop darlings James Reid and Nadine Lustre, MTV VJs Alan Wong, Hanli Hoefer, Yassi Pressman and Andre Paras hosted the event.
One Republic
Starting off with a dose of electrifying energy was one of the Philippines’ most iconic pop performers, Gary V. The legendary Philippine pop star opened his act in true, proud Filipino fashion to the beat of a kulintang, a traditional local instrument. Backed up by rising percussions, ‘Mr Pure Energy’ (as how he is affectionately known) immediately got the crowds dancing to the country’s own beats before moving into a set featuring his song “Babalik Ka Rin”. He brought his son Gab on stage in a heartfelt performance that not only told his own personal story, but to serve as an invitation from himself and his fans to welcome back MTV Music Evolution Manila for many years to come. Mr Pure Energy’s set also included some of his biggest hits, such as “Shake It Off”, “Arise” (remix version) and “Sa Yahweh ang Sayaw”, backed by no less than top dance group, The Maneuvers.
The throwback to Original Pinoy Music’s most memorable tunes then took a charming turn towards two of contemporary Pinoy pop music’s fastest rising stars, James Reid and Nadine Lustre. The young power couple opened with a duet of some well-loved singles, “Para-Paraan” by Nadine and “Huwag Ka Nang Humirit” by James. The heartthrob Reid also wooed the crowd to renditions of “Randomatic” and “Bonfire” while Nadine brought up the energy with “Me and You” and “Paligoy-ligoy”. JaDine closed the set by creating a romantic moment for all their fans with a medley of favorites like “Bahala Na” and “Hanap-Hanap”, as well as their love team’s hit song “No Erase” from the soundtrack of their first movie together, Diary ng Panget.
Bebe Rexha
The Brooklyn-born singer and songwriter whose voice has provided hooks in nearly all the current Top 40 tracks, Bebe Rexha, then took the stage. She immediately ushered in her unique brand of intensity with the hit song “Take Me Home”, epitomizing true female prowess. Bebe’s energy was undoubtable as she immediately got fans present moving to her powerful delivery of chart toppers like “The Monster”, her composition for Rihanna and Eminem, “Hey Mama” and “Me, Myself, & I”. A hyped up crowd happily sang and danced along to “No Broken Hearts” which ended her set with a bang.
The MTV Music Evolution Manila event grounds were then driven into a wild frenzy with the energy of all the K-Pop fans screaming for their lovable Korean idols, Apink. Park Cho-rong, Yoon Bo Mi, Jeong Eun-ji, Son Na Eun, Kim Nam Joo, and Oh Ha Young. The girls dazzled the crowd in matching sailor-themed outfits as they serenaded the crowd with their top hits, including “Remember”, “Mr. Chu”, and “Luv”, bringing the sweet and innocent image and street style that they are known. The K-Pop girl group showed how the language of music knows no barriers as they all moved in sync with two other songs, “Attracted to You” and “No No No” alongside a massive Pinoy audience.
Apink
Electric dance trio Far East Movement amped up the energy when they kicked off a set of their top hits. Mixing their tracks with live rap segments and synth riffs, the three artists on stage brought the crowd to whole new levels of motion—creating a sea of raised fists all moving to the same beat. Their performance featured tracks like “Push”, “G6”, “Bang It To The Curb”, and“When The Funk Drop”. Far East Movement wrapped up their set with the audience singing along to a crowd favorite “Rocketeer”, leading into an explosive outro with their hits “Illest”, “Turn Up The Love”, and “Rattle”, where they then sent giant inflatables flying out to the audience.
The evening closed with a memorable final act – multi-platinum, Grammy-nominated quintet OneRepublic had the audience moving to the beat of their most iconic songs. Opening their set with “Love Runs Out”, fans showed their appreciation for the group’s second visit to the Philippines with arms waving in the air, all around the grounds. Lead singer Ryan Tedder showed love back to his fans from the Philippines, saying “You are the most genuine people on earth.”
Far East Movement
Emotions ran high among fans when they were led into a stunning rendition of “Secrets”, performed side by side with the sweet hums from a cello. Ryan Tedder and Brent Kutzle then performed an intimate rendition of “Apologize” on piano and the cello before delighting everyone with crowd favorites, “Counting Stars” and new single “Wherever I Go”. The night closed with an amazing performance of “If I Lose Myself” that completed the experience for the tens of thousands in attendance with an explosion of confetti and fireworks to cap off MTV Music Evolution Manila 2016.
Recorded live for global telecast under the MTV World Stage global series, MTV Music Evolution Manila 2016 will reach an international audience of more than three-quarters of a billion households in over 160 countries. MTV Asia VJs Alan Wong and Hanli Hoefer hosted the event, along with MTV Pinoy VJs Yassi Pressman and Andre Paras.

1. Who are you most looking forward to seeing/ your favorite act at MTV Music Evolution Manila?
Alan – I’m really excited to see One Republic perform. I’ve been listening to their music for a while now.
Hanli – I’m looking forward to seeing Far East Movement perform again. We’ve worked with them before during MTV World Stage Malaysia and they put on a really awesome show. Everyone in the crowd was going crazy.
2. Tell us more about this year’s lines up and your comments about it?
Alan – I think this year’s lineup is awesome. Nadine Lustre and James Reid have everybody’s attention in the Philippines and with their phenomenal success this year, there could not be a better time to have them perform at MTV Music Evolution Manila. Gary V and Gab Valenciano are really talented, Far East Movement puts on an amazing show, Apink is one of the hottest Kpop groups out there, Bebe Rexha is tearing up the charts, and I’m sure One Republic’s performance will be epic. The best part about this show is that there’s a different type of pop music for everyone to enjoy.
Hanli – There’s something for everyone with this year’s lineup. This year’s theme is Can’t Stop Movin’, meaning that everyone’s going to be dancing and partying hard throughout the night! The lineup consists of One Republic, Far East Movement, Apink, Bebe Rexha, James Reid, Nadine Lustre and Gary V featuring Gab Valenciano. From pop rock to K pop to hip hop, every performance will be bring a different vibe to the table.
3. On your wish list, which acts you want to see next year?
Alan – It’s hard to say who would be on that list. There are so many amazing new artists out there making new music. I’d be interested in seeing a MTV Music Evolution show aimed at rock fans with bands like Imagine Dragons or Kings of Leon performing. I think that would be a really cool direction to take if the event is held next year.
Hanli – I would love to see Little Mix! They’re one of my favourite girl groups. I would also love to have Alicia Keys.
4. Tell us more about MTV Music Evolution Manila, what are you most anticipating for this year?
Alan – I’m most excited to the crazy audience that shows up for this concert. With over 22,000 in attendance last year and an amazing lineup this year, I can only imagine that the SM Mall of Asia Concert Grounds will popping off.
Hanli – I’m anticipating the fans! Music fans here in the Philippines go hard. Their online chatter caused our hashtag #MTVMusicEvo to trend during the concert last year. Throughout the whole night the crowd’s energy was strong and consistent. We had over 22,000 attendees last year and we hope to dance up a storm with more fans this year!
5. So we heard that the MTV Show Season 5 has just premiered; tell us how excited you are about that and what can fans expect?
Alan – I’m honestly very excited about the new season. We’re changing some things about the format and feel of the show. I think season five is a bit more down-to-earth and intimate than past seasons. It’s a bit like sitting down with a couple of your friends and just having a chat about what’s going on out there in world of music, news, and pop culture. It’s been a lot of fun filming the first few episodes of this season.
Hanli – This season of The MTV Show is a lot more fast paced than previous ones. I’m always excited to start a new season of the show. It allows our team to be a bit more daring about what we produce. It allows us VJs to be more of ourselves on television and it gives us an opportunity to add more personality to our show. Expect more laughs, more music, more artists and a wider coverage of what is trending in the world.
This new year, get your vomit bags at the ready and see filth like you’ve never seen before in the new and exciting MTVshow Grossbusters. Hosted by funnyman Evan Spaulding, the nastiest bedrooms will be brought straight to your screens every Monday, starting 25 January at 6.30pm (TH/WIB), 7.30pm (SG), 8.30pm (MY) and every Friday, starting 29 January at 11am (PH).
The show follows Evan with his HazMat-suited team on his grubby encounters to track down the dirtiest slobs and most infested pigsties. From cockroaches to dog poop to unidentified body fluids; it will have you squirming in your shoes.
After witnessing the stomach-churning mess that these guilty grime mongers have made – Evan shames them into changing their ways for good by offering each offender The Dirty Deal. To keep their side of The Dirty Deal, the sorry sleaze balls must take part in a humiliating and public Moment of Shame, before clearing their unimaginable mess and agreeing to change their filthy ways forever.
In return, the Grossbusters team will give the wrongdoer’s cesspit bedroom a life-changing Deluxe Upgrade!
With some of Evan’s comedic influences being Will Ferrell, the Wayans brothers and Jim Carrey, there is sure to be some laughter amidst all the grime. You won’t know whether to laugh or cry at some of the pigsties that Evan will be helping to muck out.
“I’m so excited to be working on this brand new show with MTV. I live and breathe comedy, so when I was asked to work on something which required finding the funny side in something so gross, I was well up to the challenge! It has been great fun, albeit a little-stomach churning at times,” says Evan Spaulding.
Episode one kicks off with slovenly student Melania and Instagram loving Justin. Melania’s room is so filthy she’s been forced to sleep at work, and Justin…well let’s just say there’s no filter on Instagram that would fix his Insta-grime!
Just as you think it couldn’t get any worse, episode two brings you Maggie from Connecticut, whose room has attracted stink bugs, and hair stylist Franchely who lets her guinea pig roam around freely, so her room is covered in animal poop!
Tune in to MTV this January and watch the Grossbusters give these bedrooms a facelift.
Comedy Central is set to premiere brand new, original comedy Big Bad World in Asia on Tuesday, 12 January 2016 at 8.55pm (TH/WIB), 9.55pm (HK/PH/SG/TW) and 10.55pm (MY). Big Bad World is a comedy about what happens when you wait for life to begin. Ben Turnbull (Blake Harrison) has just graduated and the world should be his oyster, but he quickly finds himself back in his hometown and nursing his as yet unformulated dreams.
He’s also back to hanging out with the same old gang; too-smart-for-her-own-good, charity mugger Meg, guitar-obsessive bedsit-philosopher Eggman and University-refuser and unashamed year-round-wearer-of-shorts-and-flip-flops Oakley. If it weren’t for the frequent overdraft charges, Ben might almost believe the last three years of his life never happened.
The first episode sees new graduate Ben back in his hometown, living at his parents’ house, nursing a substantial student debt and drinking in the same pub with the same old gang. The only difference between secondary school and now is that the first love of his life, Lucy, has moved on…Can he win her back?
Blake Harrison, star of the BAFTA-winning film and TV show The Inbetweeners, heads up a cast of established names and some of the fastest rising talent in comedy. David Fynn (Game of Thrones, Sherlock, Doctor Who, Black Mirror), Rebecca Humphries (Come Fly With Me) and Seann Walsh (Argumental, Live at the Apollo, Stand Up For The Week) appear alongside screen legends Caroline Quentin(Jonathan Creek, Les Miserables, Men Behaving Badly, Pippin) and James Fleet (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Vicar Of Dibley).
Big Bad World is written by Joe Tucker, Lloyd Woolf, Rose Heiney, Kevin Cecil, Andy Riley and Jon Purkis. Executive Producers are Andrew Newman and Ben Farrell and Producer is Kate Daughton. Simon Lupton is Executive Producer for Comedy Central.
