Mimpi Artilla – Kisah Cinta Seni

Back by popular demand is the musical theatre piece, Mimpi Artilla, the bespoke production that was first unveiled as the royal performance during The Royal Arts Gala in January 2014 at the Muzium Diraja (former Istana Negara). Written and directed by the acclaimed Adlin Aman Ramlie, renowned for his works in Puteri Gunung Ledang the movie, Akademi Fantasia, Maharaja Lawak Mega, Puteri Gunung Ledang the Musical and P.Ramlee the Musical amongst others, Mimpi Artilla was produced by My Performing Arts Agency (MyPAA) for the purpose of The Royal Arts Gala, in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Culture (MoTaC), and the National Department for Culture and Arts (JKKN).

The second installation of Mimpi Artilla is scheduled for 8:30 pm and 3:00 pm, 13 and 14 September 2014 respectively at the Experimental Theatre (Panggung Eksperimen), Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. The 90-minute, bi-lingual musical theatre is one of the many artistic and cultural presentations under the multi-faceted Visit Malaysia Year (VMY) tourism campaign as an avenue to showcase the diverse talents that the land possesses. The 14 September show provides the audience an opportunity to interact with the creative team and actors after the performance.

Returning to perform tunes composed by Onn San, award-winning composer whose works include The Secret Life of Nora and Everworld, are Ezlynn famous for her chart topping hit Hi Hi Bye Bye. Playing opposite her is Vince Chong, Malaysia’s singing heartthrob famous for his involvement in Akademi Fantasia 1, Muzikal Terima Kasih Cinta, The Producers and more. Choreographing and leading the 38-person ensemble is Zamzuriah Zahari, an upcoming icon in both the traditional and contemporary discipline of dance.

SYNOPSIS

The much-anticipated show revolves around Puteri Artilla (Ezlynn), who hails from the Mayan Kingdom, where the arts abound. This spunky and free spirited princess is betrothed to Prince Syah Rohan (Vince Chong) from the neighbouring Kingdom of Rohan; a kingdom that has denounced the arts since the time of their forefathers. Puteri Artilla embarks on an expedition with the Prince, one that forces them to learn about each other. Along with the Prince’s royal entourage, the expedition brings them to art-enriched corners of her Kingdom; a journey that eventually changes the Prince’s perception of the arts and of the Puteri.

Malaysia’s music festival for all ages, Good Vibes Festival #GoodVibesFest) will return this Augustwith a greater number of contemporary headliners, bigger food offerings, and more activities to exhilarate festival goers. Headlining the festival, set for 23 August 2014 at Sepang Go Kart Circuit are: Ellie Goulding (“Anything Could Happen”, “Burn”), Empire of the Sun (“Walking on a Dream”, “We Are the People”), Banks (“Fall Over”, “Before I Ever Met You”), and !!! (Chk Chk Chk) (“Must Be the Moon”, “Slyd”).

As with last year’s festival, #GoodVibesFest will also feature a formidable cohort of local and regional acts ranging from tastemaker DJs, bands, to singer-songwriters. About Kalei Gamiao

Wielding his ukulele like it will one day rule the world, Kalei Gamiao mesmerizes audiences with imaginative musicality and flawless execution. This soft spoken young man can silence a talkative crowd as he delicately picks or fires away at his simple four-stringed instrument. Captivated by his skill and the ukulele’s versatility, expressions like “I was floored” or “he had me at the edge of my seat” are familiar responses from first time listeners who eagerly fall under the power of Kalei’s ukulele. His ability to create sounds that are incredibly rich and full are even more amazing when you consider he only has two octaves to work with. Award winning ukulele master, Herb Ohta, Jr., summed it up best when he declared, “Kalei’s music and ukulele prowess will take the ukulele to new heights!”

Kalei’s been at the forefront of today’s ukulele revolution since 2008 when his debut album, “Contemporary Ukulele,” kicked up the demand for performances in the U.S., Japan and Thailand, exposing Kalei to thousands of ukulele enthusiasts. For Kalei, who says, “There is never a sad or dull moment when the ukulele is present,” the power of the ukulele goes well beyond his ability to dazzle an audience. During his travels, he witnessed the ukulele’s ability to bring people together in spite of obvious differences. Seeing these students of the ukulele happily strumming together in his workshops convinced Kalei that music has the power to inspire, heal, and create peace: “Music has the power to change the world. I’m just a messenger.” Kalei supports his belief in the power of music by actively promoting charitable organizations like the Music for Life Foundation which raises funds to provide musical instruments to Hawaii’s schools, and by offering ukulele workshops to students, in the same way in which he was mentored.

From Hawaii’s sleepy North Shore town of Haleiwa, Kalei’s adventure with the ukulele began at the age of thirteen when he suffered a sports injury while playing baseball and needed to find an activity which would keep him busy while he recovered. Following a suggestion made by his parents he decided to try ukulele lessons. After the first strum, Kalei was hooked. His exposure to a wide variety of ukulele masters including Alfred Canopin, Gordon Mark, Byron Yasui, Benny Chong and Kimo Hussey, motivated him to embrace a range of styles – jazz, rock, pop, classical, blues, flamenco, funk, as well as the music of his cultural roots, Hawaiian and island contemporary. In less than a dozen years, Kalei’s passion and dedication to his craft helped bring the ukulele sound into the twenty first century as he thrilled audiences and inspired the next generation of players to dream of one day playing just like him. Given Kalei’s determination, the unassuming ukulele just may take over the world.
